After last week, when we had the pleasure to talk with Beny, the manager of Poland national team, now it’s time to hear the other finalist in this season’s World Cup: Bluep, manager of the Estonian national team. We should be aware that the interview took place before the final to be played, so some questions might look as out of date now. Let’s listen to him:

Let's start with a short history of Estonian NT...

Estonia have done just fine. We’ve been in a world cup semi final when Sillu was the coach and we’ve always reached the group stage of the world cup.

Now, the current season: how did you managed to reach the final? Hard, easy, luck, how was it?

I guess people say we were a bit lucky with the draws also but we did achieve that through hard work in our group beating Belgium and scoring enough goals to get us in to that position. We were always a class higher than our opponents (at least that’s what our opponents thought), and therefore I could play safe. It wasn’t easy but we managed well.

Tell me a little about the Estonian community from sokker: how many managers do you have, comparing for example with Poland or even Romania?
And how do they see sokker? How come that even you are few, you have such a strong NT, what is your secret?

There are currently about 600 users in Estonia. Not many are active, though: there were only 68 voters during the last elections and only 50 are said to watch NT matches occasionally. Just a handful is active in NT topic. For many people, training youngsters seems to be the most interesting part of the game – we have our Estonian Sokker Web where players are compared using a special formula and that „Star” list is quite a motivator for people. :) I think the secret is that the Estonian Sokker started off rather early and with a lot of managers. If you take a look at the forum archives, you can see that there were many active people and they all generated players from their youth schools.

How does it look a week as a national team manager, especially that you also have your club team to take care of (relate in few steps your weekly work on the NT, combined with the work for your own team).

I don’t do anything with my club nowadays, I hardly even follow the training and consider myself lucky if I remember to set a team for Sunday – I don’t even watch my own matches at the moment. I don’t do much with the NT either during a week. :p When there are important matches coming up like the last couple of weeks, I think how to play and so on but I don’t usually decide anything until Thursday when I have the latest form changes.

Which was the biggest disappointment you had in sokker?

There’s nothing particular, I think. It has probably something to do with the engine but it happens…

How much time do you alocate for sokker each day?

It depends. I log in a lot but I don’t think I spend more than 2 hours a day if to add up the time, probably less – about an hour. The night I prepare for the NT game takes significantly longer, though, and the matchday also if I succeed. :-]

Do you have a preferred tactic (like 4-4-2, 4-3-3 etc)? If yes, what are the advantages and disadvantages of it?

No, I don’t have a preferred tactic.

What would you like most to be changed in sokker and why? Do you believe it will be changed?

I’d like to see the devs in contact with the people if there’s something wrong and I’d like more slots for conditional orders. I think and hope we’re making progress.

How was the match with Romania and what was your secret or the "surprising thing" for winning the game?

I didn’t go for anything surprising, this wasn’t the plan. The plan was to play as safe as possible, to have a clear way of attack whatever you come up with. As I knew you think we’re the favourites, I didn’t want you to surprise me. So, as I said, I went to play safe: to have a winger in case you play 4 in the back, or to have through passes if you play 5, the moving of the attackers would’ve created passing-ways even if you had used 6. The key was the strikers, though, at least that’s what I think. Romania had 1 who only managed 4 shots on goal, Estonia had 2 who managed double the amount. If you remember then both of our goals came from situations where both of the strikers were involved. It’s always a little bit more risky to only have 1 striker

In your opinion, does Romania have some chances to win World Cup next season?

Definitely. You have a lot of users and your team is developing really fast, in fact, it is already very strong. You say you’re weak? I don’t buy it!! I only know the skills of Paul and Dimitrie, but both of them would be indispensable for the Estonian NT. Do not underestimate yourselves!

Which was the hardest game on this season that Estonia played?

So far it’s been against Romania, of course, but there’s one of great importance yet to come.

Which country do you think that it will be the next world champion besides Poland and Eesti?

Don’t forget that Italy already is a world champion. :) Hmm, I think the countries with more users will have more playing ground in the future but as teams are quite equal strength wise, it could be anybody’s ball game.

Let's suppose we have this situation: the first striker is out for an injury and the striker from the bench is not in shape (he has little form). You have also on the bench a reliable midfielder. What would you do: play with the out of shape striker, play in attack with the midfielder or you just change the tactic? Explain the reasons for your choice.

I’d change the tactics. Tactics should be made based on what you can use and a midfielder without decent pace, technique and especially striker skill would most likely be a flop in attack :) But there has to be at least somebody up front so I’d choose the best man for the position. If he’s not good enough, playing through winger might help.

What plans do you have for the future of Estonian NT?

After the WC, if I can’t find anything more to fight for, I’d like to let somebody else try a hand with the tactics, if there’s anybody interested, of course.

Now, looking forward to the final against Poland from this Saturday: who do you think will win and why?

Poland is very strong but I don’t underestimate Estonia. It could turn out to be a disaster but it’s still been an interesting season.

Thank you very much for your time and patience and good luck for Saturday, on final! Let that the best to win :)

Thank you and all the best to the Romanian community!
